How can I stop large puddles of water forming after the sprinkler system runs, should I add dirt to level it?
I recently purchased a new home complete with sprinkler system but large pools of water form and the grass is discolored. The time is 15 minutes for the longest section and overlapping is not a problem. Should I add dirt to these areas to try and level my yard? I have seen neighbors add dirt on seemingly beautiful lawns but haven’t caught them at the right time to ask why they are doing this.
The puddles could be forming for a bunch of different reasons.
First it could be low head drainage:http://www.sprinkler.com/sprinkler-how-to/troubleshooting-your-sprinkler-system/sprinkler-tutorials/troubleshooting-sprinkler-heads/troubleshooting-a-leaking-sprinkler-when-system-is-off/ This means that when you turn the system off, the water left in the pipes will naturally flow out of the lowest head. This can be fixed by installing a check valve in the sprinkler: http://www.sprinkler.com/sprinkler-how-to/sprinkler-diy/sprinkler-installation-manual/installing-a-check-valve/
Next, you could be over-watering or watering at the wrong time. Make sure you aren’t over watering in a attempt to reach brown spots. Check out these pages for more info on that: http://www.sprinkler.com/sprinkler-how-to/sprinkler-diy/sprinkler-system-designs/hunter-industries-residential-sprinkler-system-design-handbook/watering-guidelines and http://www.sprinkler.com/sprinkler-how-to/sprinkler-diy/water-conservation/water-conservation-tips
Finally, depending on how much of a slope you have, that might be the problem. Gradually add soil to lift that portion up, but remember you are going to lift the sprinklers up gradually too.
Good luck!
