Can I transplant some shrubs in early march? – losing my home and have a few I want to take?

Specifically I want to see if I can carefully transplant into containers some Roses, Hydrangeas, French Lilacs and dig up my bulbs early…..lost the house to the bank, and I just don’t want to lose everything from my garden! It was bad enough with layoffs and cancer….but losing my flowers is more than I can bear..

Roses are more transplant sensitive and adapt to new soil more slowly than others plants. I tried transplanting a large knockout rose bush unsuccessfully. I think it was due to the fact it was mid-summer and I had cut some roots. Use extreme care when removing not to damage roots. The best time would be early spring.

Hydrarangeas you should be ok with if transplant is done properly. They are easier to transplant when dormant.

French Lilacs I’m not sure. I know they bloom in early spring and are dormant now. I would think very early spring would be the best time to transplant, if any.
